BARRY GILES OF WOODFORD HALSE JAILED FOR 13 YEARS OVER RUGBY CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
In December 2011, Barry Giles, a 39-year-old resident of Station Road, Woodford Halse near Daventry, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl in Rugby. Giles had pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court to charges of sexual assault and three counts of assault by penetration. However, jurors took just one hour to convict him after evidence revealed he had also committed a similar act against his ex-wife, a relationship that had involved cheating with a 14-year-old girl.Following the jury's convictions in October, Judge Trevor Faber delayed sentencing to prepare a pre-sentence report. On the subsequent hearing at Coventry Crown Court, Judge Faber sentenced Giles to 13 years and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life. Giles was also barred from ever working with children in any capacity and was subject to a sexual offences prevention order that prohibits any unsupervised contact with minors.
Prosecutor Simon Ward stated that Giles had initially met the girl’s mother through a dating website. The court heard that last year, the girl, then 11, revealed that Giles had sexually abused her during times when he was caring for her while her mother was out. Police investigations uncovered that Giles had previously engaged in an illicit relationship with a 13-year-old girl at age 23 in the late 1990s, while he was married and living in southern England. When his wife discovered this relationship, which started during a camping holiday, she left him. Giles continued the relationship with the girl until she turned 16.
Judge Faber emphasized the severity of Giles's actions and emphasized the importance of community safety by imposing strict restrictions, including lifetime registration and contact limitations.
