BRADFORD MAN BABUL AHMED ADMITS TO HISTORIC SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON TEENAGE GIRL
A COURT has heard how a 67-year-old Bradford man who carried out historic sexual assaults on a teenage girl has become “a pariah” within his community.Father-of-six Babul Ahmed, of Ophelia Close, will have to register as a sex offender for the next ten years after admitting three sexual assaults against his victim – but avoided an immediate prison term.
When he was eventually arrested, he denied the offences but pleaded guilty on the day of trial.
In a statement read to the court, his victim said she had experienced anxiety, depression, loneliness, sadness, fear, and feelings of shame, and that her mental health had suffered.
She said Ahmed’s assaults “changed me.
I don’t know who I might have been and how my life might have looked had I not experienced the trauma.” The court heard that Ahmed was a man of previous good character.
Mitigating, Soheil Khan said Ahmed had “lost face and his good name” within his community.
“His shame is such that he perhaps struggled to even articulate it to the author of the [Probation Service] pre-sentence report.
“He seeks to apologise through me for what was utterly deplorable behaviour.” Addressing Ahmed as he stood in the dock, Mr Recorder Anthony Hawks told him he was prepared to impose a suspended prison sentence due to the historic nature of the offences, Babul’s previous good character, and his remorse.
He said: “Until you pleaded guilty to these three sexual assaults you were a man of previous good character.
“You’re not a man of good character now.
“Let me make this clear: any abuse of a young child like this will lead to horrendous consequences on that young person’s life both as a child and subsequently as an adult.
I hope it’s been made clear to you what effect your behaviour had upon her.
“You told the probation officer that you were ashamed of yourself, and so you should be.
You have brought that on yourself.” Recorder Hawks sentenced Ahmed to a total of 15 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years and said he must register as a sex offender for ten years.
He was also ordered to undertake 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days and to pay the victim surcharge.
