CARDIFF MAN JAILED FOR RAPING WOMAN ON QUEEN STREET
Aymen Smaili, a 35-year-old man with no fixed address and in Britain on a six-month visitor's visa from the Middle East, was convicted for a serious sexual assault on a woman in Cardiff city centre.
The incident occurred on Queen Street when Smaili followed the victim, a woman in her 20s, after she left a nightclub around 2:30 am.
Despite her being fairly intoxicated, Smaili approached her, and after a failed attempt to communicate due to his strong Arabic accent, he pushed her against a wall and raped her in a lane off Queen Street.
The victim was described as 'frozen' and 'really scared,' with tears in her eyes during the attack.
After the assault, Smaili asked for her name and phone number; she provided fake details.
She expressed feelings of dirtiness and contamination, saying, 'This makes me feel dirty, and I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin.
I feel contaminated.
I just want to scrub it all away.
I don’t feel clean.' The court sentenced Smaili to five and a half years in prison, acknowledging his guilty plea at the first opportunity, which reduced his original sentence from over eight years to 66 months.
He is required to serve half of his sentence before release and must register as a sex offender.
