A teacher from Ayrshire who was convicted of sexually assaulting a female student on school premises has narrowly avoided imprisonment.

Asif Rafiq, aged 48, lost his position as a technological studies instructor after the incident occurred in February of the previous year.

Following a trial held at Ayr Sheriff Court in April, Rafiq was found guilty of the sexual assault charges.

In a recent court hearing, he was sentenced to a Community Payback Order (CPO), which mandates 18 months of supervision along with 200 hours of unpaid community service.
