BRADFORD TAXI DRIVER JAILED FOR RAPING PASSENGER
A taxi driver has received a decade-long prison sentence after being convicted of raping a female passenger.Asif Khan, 37 years old and living on Great Horton Road in Bradford, assaulted a young woman in her late teens following a pick-up from Oxford’s Atik nightclub.
The assault took place in the early hours of August 19, 2017.
According to police investigations, Khan was found guilty of rape by Oxford Crown Court.
Evidence including condom wrappers found in the victim’s bin and a Bluetooth headset belonging to Khan linked him to the incident.
Authorities identified Khan using Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology and forensic evidence.
Denying the charges, Khan was sentenced and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
A police spokesperson criticized Khan's breach of trust as a licensed taxi driver, emphasizing the victim’s vulnerability and calling the act “utterly abhorrent.” The officer commended the victim for her bravery and dignity during the court proceedings and expressed hope that the sentence would help her and the community find some measure of relief.
The spokesperson also noted that such cases are very rare and mentioned ongoing efforts to improve vetting and training for taxi drivers in Oxford.
