RAPIST WHO SET FIRE TO VICTIM’S CAR SENTENCED TO 7 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS FOR RAPE, ARSON, AND COERCIVE CONTROL
A man has received a prison sentence of 7 years and 8 months after being convicted of two counts of rape, as well as charges of arson and coercive control against a woman in West Sussex.Arthur Norris, also known as Alfy Norris, aimed to isolate and dominate the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
He claimed that her family and friends were harmful influences.
Authorities were prompted to act when Norris set fire to the woman's car after visiting her home.
She then disclosed that she had been subjected to rape and control by him.
The 35-year-old, formerly residing on Montalan Crescent in Selsey, faced trial at Portsmouth Crown Court in December.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on all four charges without disagreement.
During the proceedings, it was revealed how the woman disclosed the severity of the sexual abuse and manipulation following Norris’s act of arson on her vehicle in July 2022.
Law enforcement officers quickly apprehended Norris, who was remanded into custody pending trial.
On March 6, Norris was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison.
Detective Constable Jason Berney commented, “Norris attempted to deceive those around him, including the victim, by lying and manipulating to deny his crimes.
Fortunately, the jury identified his falsehoods.” He also emphasized that this case exemplifies law enforcement's commitment to securing justice for rape survivors, stating, “We take complaints seriously and inform victims of how investigations will unfold.” Throughout the legal process, the victim received assistance from specially-trained officers.
Despite Norris’s attempts at deception, he is now incarcerated.
