ARCHIEBALD AND JAMES BORELAND FROM PERTHSHIRE SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CATTLE NEGLECT AT ABERNYTE FARM

Two brothers hailing from Perthshire, Archiebald and James Boreland, aged 72 and 70 respectively, have been formally sentenced following their conviction for severe neglect of their livestock. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of animal mistreatment at Abernyte Farm, located in Errol, where the brothers owned a herd of 93 cattle.

According to court records, the brothers were found guilty of allowing their cattle to suffer in deplorable conditions, with veterinary and animal welfare officials repeatedly reporting the state of neglect. The herd was in such a dire state that the animals' bones were visibly protruding through their skin, a clear sign of extreme malnutrition and dehydration. The neglect was so severe that, in May 2012, the brothers were convicted of failing to provide basic necessities such as adequate water and proper nutrition for their animals.

Inspectors described the cattle's living environment as unsanitary and hazardous. The animals were confined in pens covered with slurry, which posed significant risks of injury and suffering. Witnesses, including veterinary officers and animal welfare inspectors, expressed their shock at the condition of the herd, emphasizing the extent of neglect. The situation was so dire that three of the heifers, suffering from such poor health, had to be humanely euthanized to prevent further suffering.

Despite being warned multiple times about the unacceptable conditions, the Boreland brothers failed to take any corrective measures. Their continued neglect led to the court imposing a strict five-year ban on them owning any animals, with the exception of their pet cats. The court emphasized that the neglect was evident and egregious, highlighting the failure of the brothers to meet the basic needs of their livestock.

At present, the brothers only own two pet cats, which they have expressed a desire to retain. The case underscores the serious issues surrounding animal welfare at Abernyte Farm and serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences faced by those who neglect their responsibilities towards animals. The court's decision aims to prevent further abuse and ensure that such neglect does not recur in the future.
