AOIFE MCDOWELL FROM DUNMURRY SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO XL BULLY IN BELFAST
In a case that has shocked the local community, Aoife McDowell, a woman born around 1995 and residing in Dunmurry, was found guilty in 2025 of severe animal cruelty charges following a prosecution initiated by Belfast City Council. The charges stemmed from her gross neglect of an XL Bully dog, which she abandoned inside her house. The house was in a deplorable state, filled with feces, rubbish, and clutter, reflecting a complete disregard for the animal’s welfare. McDowell admitted to leaving her dog unattended for approximately nine days, during which the animal was left without access to food or water.
Authorities responded to the scene after receiving a note left for McDowell, urging her to contact them immediately. When welfare officers revisited the property, they discovered the dog in a dire condition, barking inside the house amidst the filth. The dog had been left to fend for itself in an environment that was both hazardous and neglectful.
The dog had chewed through furniture and tins of food in a desperate attempt to find sustenance, likely injuring itself in the process and suffering greatly. The animal’s condition was so severe that it was euthanized on the spot to prevent further suffering.
During the court proceedings, McDowell pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering and abandonment. Her sentencing included an eight-month prison term for the cruelty and a four-month sentence for abandonment, both to be served concurrently. However, these sentences were suspended for a period of 12 months, meaning she would not serve time unless she committed further offenses within that period.
Additionally, McDowell was ordered to pay £400 towards the costs incurred during the investigation and legal process. She was also handed a ban on keeping any animals for a period of 15 years, which will last until 2040, reflecting the seriousness of her actions and the court’s stance on animal welfare.
