MAN JAILED FOR 'UNPLEASANT' STREET ASSAULT ON VULNERABLE WOMAN
A man’s prolonged street assault on a vulnerable female companion was witnessed by a woman in a nearby care home, who reported it to police.
Durham Crown Court heard that the incident occurred around 11am on February 5 this year, when Anthony Preston was seen swinging his arms in the direction of a woman before walking away.
The care home carer who witnessed the assault went to help the injured woman, who had a cut above her right eye that was bleeding, her right cheekbone swollen, and other injuries including a shoulder wound and bruising to her arm.
The woman, who was intoxicated and had been drinking that day, expressed her reluctance to report the incident, fearing Preston’s retaliation.
Preston was later arrested outside the RVI hospital in Newcastle, admitted to assaulting his partner, and was later convicted and sentenced to 17 months in custody after initially denying the charge.
The court noted Preston’s long record of violent behavior, his breach of a restraining order, and the fact that the assault had caused significant pain and suffering to the victim, who was described as frightened and vulnerable.
