ANTHONY NIGHTINGALE FROM PLATT BRIDGE ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY
In August 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Anthony Nightingale, a 19-year-old resident of Stanley Road in Platt Bridge, who was found to have downloaded and possessed a significant collection of child abuse images and extreme pornography. Despite the gravity of his actions, Nightingale narrowly avoided imprisonment, receiving a combination of community-based sentences and orders instead.Authorities uncovered that Nightingale had accessed and stored a total of 88 images classified at the most severe level of indecency involving children. In addition to these, investigators discovered over 100 other examples of child pornography, alongside 18 images depicting extreme acts involving animals. These findings were part of a broader investigation into the downloading of indecent images, which initially linked two different online accounts registered under female names to the case.
During a police operation, officers executed a search warrant at Nightingale’s family home in Platt Bridge. The search revealed further disturbing material, including a stash of indecent images stored on his mobile phone. Among these were two particularly serious files related to child sexual abuse and six extreme pornographic images involving animals. The mobile device was confiscated and subjected to detailed analysis, confirming the extent of his possession.
Despite the serious nature of his offenses, Nightingale cooperated with police during the investigation. He explained that he had applied to join the Armed Forces and was eager to avoid any delays in his recruitment process. His willingness to cooperate was noted during proceedings, which took place at Bolton Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images and one charge of possessing extreme pornography.
Following his guilty plea, Nightingale was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court. He was ordered to sign the sex offenders register within 72 hours of his pre-sentence hearing at Wigan Magistrates’ Court. His registration will remain active for five years. Additionally, he received a five-year sexual prevention order and a two-year community order, which impose restrictions on his activities and require him to adhere to certain conditions. Notably, the judge decided against imposing a custodial sentence, allowing him to retain most of his freedom.
During the magistrates’ court hearing, prosecutor Katie Beattie revealed that at the time of the police raid, Nightingale was alone at his home, as his mother and two younger siblings were away on holiday. Interestingly, he voluntarily handed over a device that had not been initially discovered during the search. When questioned by police, Nightingale denied any sexual interest in children but admitted to viewing adult pornography, a statement that was considered during sentencing.
His defense attorney, Bob Topping, highlighted that Nightingale had no prior criminal record and requested that a pre-sentence report be prepared to better assess his circumstances. The severity of possessing indecent images varies depending on the content, with Category A images—those deemed most serious—potentially resulting in a prison sentence starting at 26 weeks and extending up to three years. Less severe images may attract community orders, and possession alone carries a lighter penalty compared to distribution or production, which can lead to sentences of up to nine years in prison.
Overall, this case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, while also highlighting the legal complexities involved in sentencing such offenses.
