ROTHERHAM SEX OFFENDER ANDREW WILCOX SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN SHEFFIELD

A young woman from Rotherham has publicly shared her profound feelings of devastation and emotional distress following a traumatic sexual assault carried out by Andrew Wilcox, a man known to have committed these heinous acts within the Rotherham area.

The incident, which took place on a single night, involved Wilcox, aged 51, assaulting the woman twice, with the second attack being so violent that her screams drew the attention of nearby witnesses.

This disturbing event was brought before Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, where the victim’s powerful testimony was read aloud, revealing the deep scars left by Wilcox’s actions.

The young woman expressed her feelings of being 'completely broken,' emphasizing how the assault has left her feeling profoundly violated.

She described the haunting memory of Wilcox’s hand on her body, which continues to dominate her thoughts and cause her ongoing emotional pain.

Her words painted a picture of a normal Saturday night turning into the worst night of her life, an experience that has shattered her sense of safety and stability.

She further explained how the trauma has plunged her into depression, and she is now anxiously awaiting counseling, which she has been placed on a waiting list for.

She fears that engaging in therapy will force her to confront the painful memories once again, adding to her sense of helplessness.

The victim also shared her feeling that her life has been put on hold, waiting for Wilcox to admit guilt and for the legal process to conclude, so she can begin to heal.

She is entitled to lifelong anonymity, but her voice was heard in court to highlight the profound impact of Wilcox’s crimes.

Prosecutor Louise Reevell detailed the nature of the assaults, confirming that Wilcox sexually assaulted the woman twice.

During the second assault, her screams were so loud that they attracted the attention of those nearby, underscoring the severity of the incident.

In sentencing, Judge David Dixon addressed Wilcox directly, noting that any remorse he displayed appeared to be motivated more by concern over the consequences of his actions rather than genuine regret for the harm caused.

The judge criticized Wilcox for attempting to minimize his responsibility and for evading accountability throughout the proceedings.

As the sentence was handed down, Wilcox was instructed to stand, a gesture of respect and courtesy to the victim and to acknowledge the seriousness of his crimes.

Wilcox, of Howard Road, Bramley, Rotherham, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault during an earlier hearing.

Defense lawyer Rebecca Tanner acknowledged that Wilcox’s behavior was disgraceful and deplorable, emphasizing that nothing in her client’s actions should be seen as minimizing the gravity of his offenses.

She pointed out that Wilcox has no prior convictions and that his early guilty plea might indicate remorse and acceptance of responsibility.

Ms.

Tanner described Wilcox as a man who had led an otherwise ordinary, hard-working life, actively involved in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and parents.

She argued that Wilcox has a realistic chance of rehabilitation, suggesting that this, combined with other mitigating factors, could justify avoiding immediate imprisonment.

However, Judge Dixon dismissed these claims, stating that Wilcox’s ongoing efforts to manipulate and minimize his actions demonstrated that he was unlikely to be rehabilitated.

The judge emphasized that the severity of the crimes warranted an immediate custodial sentence.

Consequently, Wilcox was sentenced to 13 months in prison.

Additionally, the court imposed a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim for 15 years, along with a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.

Wilcox was also ordered to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated, reaffirming the importance of protecting victims and maintaining public safety within the Rotherham community and beyond.
