MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR ASSAULT AND STRANGULATION IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE
An offender named Andrew Symons, aged 33, from Cardiff, was involved in a domestic violence incident where he punched and strangled his partner following an argument about getting a dog.The incident occurred after they had spent the day together, and the victim told Symons they could not get a dog due to their circumstances.
In response, Symons became aggressive, shouting and swearing at the victim, saying: "I am going to get this f****** dog you horrible c***." He then assaulted her physically, punching her to her nose causing her to see stars, and hitting her to the face with a clenched fist, which shocked her as he had not acted violently before.
The situation escalated when Symons grabbed her by the throat and pinned her against a door, holding her for approximately a minute and preventing her speech.
She then managed to call the police.
The attack left her with bruises and marks on her face, arms, legs, and soreness in various areas.
During the court hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, Symons pleaded guilty to charges of intentional strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The court, noting his lack of remorse and victim empathy, sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment and imposed a restraining order for five years.
The victim provided a personal statement describing ongoing nightmares, anxiety, and the lasting impact of the assault.
Symons has a history of alcohol and drug problems and psychological issues, compounded by struggles with his sexuality.
