According to court reports, the girl, who was just over 11 years old, was only able to escape when Miller fell asleep on the second night of her captivity. Seizing this opportunity, she managed to knock a glass off a table and turned on a light, hoping this would wake him. Fortunately, the girl succeeded in escaping the bedroom and used the landline telephone to call emergency services. The police responded swiftly, arriving within minutes of her call.

When law enforcement officers found Miller, he was still asleep and dressed in female clothing, including a bra, silicone-enhanced breasts, female tights, and underwear. The girl was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and assessment, confirming injuries consistent with her account.

During police interviews, Miller claimed he had only stopped to 'help' the girl because she appeared to be cold, suggesting he was acting in a motherly capacity. However, evidence gathered from the scene, including CCTV footage, proved otherwise. It showed him turning his car into the opposite lane, remaining stationary behind a wall for over a minute, then driving away with the girl.
