ANDREW MILLER AND THE ABDUCTION AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN MELROSE

A man named Andrew Miller has confessed to a disturbing series of crimes involving the abduction and sexual assault of a young girl in the Scottish Borders, specifically around the village of Gattonside near Melrose.

The incident dates back to February of this year, when Miller, also known by the name Amy George, cautiously offered to give a primary school girl a ride home after she was walking with an empty phone battery. The girl accepted the offer, believing she was entering a non-threatening situation, unaware of Miller’s true intentions. Instead of heading straight home, Miller drove her in his vehicle to his residence, a detached three-bedroom bungalow situated within a residential street in Gattonside.

Once at his home, Miller took the girl into a bedroom and refused her any opportunity to leave. Over the course of the following 27 hours, he subjected her to repeated sexual assaults. According to court reports, the girl, who was just over 11 years old, was only able to escape when Miller fell asleep on the second night of her captivity. Seizing this opportunity, she managed to knock a glass off a table and turned on a light, hoping this would wake him. Fortunately, the girl succeeded in escaping the bedroom and used the landline telephone to call emergency services. The police responded swiftly, arriving within minutes of her call.

When law enforcement officers found Miller, he was still asleep and dressed in female clothing, including a bra, silicone-enhanced breasts, female tights, and underwear. The girl was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and assessment, confirming injuries consistent with her account.

During police interviews, Miller claimed he had only stopped to 'help' the girl because she appeared to be cold, suggesting he was acting in a motherly capacity. However, evidence gathered from the scene, including CCTV footage, proved otherwise. It showed him turning his car into the opposite lane, remaining stationary behind a wall for over a minute, then driving away with the girl. The prosecution detailed how Miller had removed her phone upon arrival and carried out his sexual offenses shortly after bringing her inside.

The court heard that Miller, who was living alone at the time and had previously operated a butcher shop in Melrose that was closed months before the incident, had a history of watching pornography and fetish videos on television, some of which she described as 'weird.' Throughout the ordeal, she repeatedly expressed her desire to return home, but Miller refused, telling her he intended to keep her for a week and that he considered her part of his 'new family.'

The girl’s courage was evident when she managed to call 999 during Miller's sleep on the second night. Her distress was palpable during the call, yet she expressed relief once police arrived and rescued her.

The police arrested Miller at his home, where he was found still dressed as a woman, and he was subsequently taken into custody. During his interview, Miller maintained that he had acted as a 'Good Samaritan' and denied any sexual misconduct. He claimed that he had merely provided warmth to the girl, describing his actions as helping her pass the cold night.

Miller, aged 53, has a criminal history comprising ten summary offences, though none of a nature comparable to the crimes for which he is currently charged. He was presented in court via videolink and did not appear in person. At the time of arrest, he was wearing a maroon sweater issued by the Scottish Prison Service.

In addition to the abduction and sexual assault charges, Miller was accused of possessing 242 indecent images of children and deliberately exposing a child under 13 to sexual images. The courts heard that he had accumulated these images over a 19-year period.

The High Court in Edinburgh, presided over by Lord Arthurson, will sentence Miller on August 15. The judges are considering imposing a lifelong restriction order, which would involve ongoing supervision and monitoring, reflecting the severity of his crimes. The court also indicated that Miller would serve an extended sentence of 28 years, with 20 years in prison followed by an 8-year extension on supervised release.

In their remarks, the judge expressed profound condemnation of Miller's actions, emphasizing the depravity, planning, and the profound impact on the victim and her family. The court highlighted the rarity and gravity of such crimes, calling them an attack on the very fabric of societal and familial trust.

Following the arrest, there was significant unrest within the community of Melrose. The windows of Miller’s butcher shop were boarded up amid public outrage, with many residents eager to distance themselves from his actions. Miller, originally from Jedburgh, was also known to frequent local bars and was seen drinking alone, often under the alias Amy George. His case attracted considerable media attention, with angry locals shouting and chasing the prison van as he was taken into custody.

This case has also fueled ongoing debates regarding the treatment of transgender individuals in the criminal justice system, especially concerning sexual offenses. Miller is currently held in a male prison wing, adhering to new guidelines for transgender prisoners following recent cases and public outcry.

In conclusion, Andrew Miller's trial and upcoming sentencing reflect the seriousness with which such heinous crimes are viewed in Scotland. The well-being and safety of the victim, her enduring trauma, and the community's sense of justice are central to this case, underscoring the need for stringent measures and firm justice.
