ANDREW DOBLER FROM LONGHOPE SENTENCED FOR ABUSING CHILDREN IN SWANSEA

In July 2019, a serious case unfolded involving Andrew James Dobler, a man from Longhope, Gloucestershire, who was brought before Swansea Crown Court to face charges related to the sexual abuse of two young girls in the Swansea area. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of Dobler's actions, which have left a lasting impact on his victims.

Dobler, aged 56 at the time, pleaded guilty to ten counts of sexual assault involving children under the age of 13. The initial allegations surfaced after an anonymous phone call raised concerns about his behavior, prompting police investigation. Further evidence was uncovered when authorities found a handwritten note in one of the young girls' diaries, which detailed inappropriate conduct by Dobler. Despite initially denying the charges, claiming it was a mistake, Dobler later admitted to the offenses during police interviews.

The court heard that Dobler's abuse took place in the Swansea region, with reports indicating that he sometimes used a pillow to conceal his actions while other adults were present in the vicinity. Prosecutor Robin Rouch described how Dobler would coerce the children into keeping their experiences secret, often telling them, “it’s our secret, don’t tell anyone about it.” When questioned by police, Dobler responded with a 'no comment,' refusing to cooperate.

Victims' statements were read aloud in court, painting a heartbreaking picture of the long-term emotional scars inflicted by Dobler’s actions. One girl expressed how her experience has altered her perception of older men, even those she once trusted. Her words reflected the deep psychological impact, stating, “On the bus, the bus driver has not done anything but it has made me anxious,” and “I can wake up feeling happy but that can alter quickly.” These testimonies underscored the profound and lasting damage caused by the abuse.

Judge Paul Thomas delivered a stern condemnation of Dobler’s conduct, emphasizing the severity and lasting consequences of his actions. He stated, “What you did to these two young girls was something which will have an impact on them far beyond the short-lived physical acts. Had you done these things to a grown woman it would have been terrible, but to do it to two children was simply appalling.” The judge highlighted the emotional and physical toll on the victims, noting that such abuse destroys confidence, self-worth, and trust in others, especially men. He warned that the victims’ recovery would be slow and uncertain, if it occurs at all.

As a result of his conviction, Dobler was sentenced to five years in prison. Additionally, he was issued a sexual offences prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
