ANDREW DAVIDSON FROM ROSSINGTON AND ROTHERHAM SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Rossington and Rotherham, Andrew Davidson, a 58-year-old man suffering from early onset dementia, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl. The incident took place at his residence on Dolcliffe Close in Mexborough, a town within the Rotherham area, during August of the previous year.

Davidson’s personal circumstances at the time were marked by significant turmoil. He was struggling to manage the emotional and financial fallout from the collapse of his marriage, compounded by mounting debts that had left him in a state of distress. These personal struggles appeared to have contributed to his actions, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.

The court proceedings revealed that Davidson’s victim was a young girl who, due to her age and circumstances, cannot be publicly identified. The attack was reported after another child witnessed the assault and informed an adult. This adult then contacted the police, prompting an investigation into the incident. The police response was swift, and Davidson was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

During the police interview, Davidson initially denied any involvement, claiming he could not remember the events. However, on the day scheduled for his trial, he unexpectedly confessed to the offence. Despite his claims of amnesia, he acknowledged that he believed his young accuser, who was clearly distressed and emotional during her police report, had been truthful.

Judge Paul Watson QC described the incident as a “moment of weakness,” but emphasized that the gravity of the offence warranted a custodial sentence. He pointed out that the victim would carry the emotional scars for the rest of her life, underscoring the seriousness of Davidson’s actions.

As part of his sentence, Davidson was ordered to comply with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for a period of ten years, aimed at monitoring and restricting his activities to prevent any future offences.
