JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN
A man aged 42 from Sheffield was sentenced to more than six years in prison on Monday, 31 May, after he admitted to committing sexual offences involving minors.Andrew Dalby, who resides in Hemsworth, Sheffield, was detained by Hertfordshire police following an operation that targeted offenders seeking to exploit children online through social media platforms and chat rooms.
Between October 20, 2022, and December 10, 2022, officers from the Child Online Safeguarding Team (COST) observed Dalby engaging in online discussions with someone he believed was a 14-year-old male, falsely claiming to be a 30-year-old doctor based in Sheffield.
As their communication continued, Dalby proposed meeting in person, mentioning a health check.
The chat then turned sexual, with Dalby arranging to stay overnight at a hotel in St Albans.
Dalby traveled to St Albans and was arrested there by police at the hotel he had booked.
A search of his vehicle uncovered items including condoms and medical supplies.
He was charged and temporarily held in custody while investigations went forward.
Further analysis of his digital devices revealed additional victims in Hull, Great Yarmouth, Birmingham, and South Wales, who had been contacted through similar online communications by specialist officers.
Dalby faced ten total charges: the original two involved attempting sexual communication with a minor and arranging a child sex offence, while the other eight included causing a child to engage in sexual activities (three counts), engaging in sexual communication with a child (four counts), and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity (one count).
He appeared at St Albans Crown Court on 26 May 2023, initially denying but ultimately pleading guilty to all charges.
On 31 July, he was sentenced to a combined prison term of six years and nine months after his plea.
