RAWCLIFFE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO 30-YEAR-OLD RAPE
A man named Andrew Charles Pennington is facing a lengthy prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to raping a woman nearly 30 years after the crime was committed.The incident occurred in Castlegate, York, where the woman was in her twenties.
The victim has suffered enduring emotional distress as a result of the assault.
Pennington, 53 years old and residing in Rawcliffe near Goole, admitted to rape and indecent assault involving the same woman.
He remained at large for 29 years until an encounter with a prostitute in 2009 led to his DNA being collected, which subsequently matched the DNA found at the crime scene through a cold case review.
York Crown Court was told that the victim has been receiving specialist support from police.
Pennington's case was adjourned until January 19 for further investigations into his activities since the assault.
Judge Paul Batty QC emphasized the severity of the crime and its lasting impact on the victim, warning that Pennington will likely be subject to a long prison term and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Pennington was remanded in custody and appeared via video link from Lincoln Prison.
He was arrested by the Cleveland and North Yorkshire Police Major Investigation Team.
