ANDREW BROWN FROM NETHERFIELDS SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND VIOLENCE IN TEESSIDE
In July 2017, Andrew Brown, a man from Netherfields, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of serious sexual and violent crimes. The court heard harrowing details of his actions, which left a profound impact on his victims and drew widespread condemnation.Brown, aged 25 at the time, was described by the judge as a dangerous individual who posed a significant risk to women. His conviction followed a trial in which a jury found him guilty of a sexual assault that nearly destroyed the life of the victim involved. The court portrayed Brown as a manipulative and aggressive figure, someone who exerted control over women and instilled deep fear in them.
During the sentencing, Recorder Nicholas Barker delivered a stark assessment of Brown’s behavior, stating, “In many ways you believed that you owned her. At times you played with her emotions until they were frayed. You gained her confidence and then shattered it.” The judge’s words underscored the manipulative tactics Brown employed to dominate his victims emotionally and psychologically.
Several women bravely came forward to describe the physical and mental abuse they endured at Brown’s hands. One victim revealed that Brown even manipulated her into obtaining a restraining order against her own parents, illustrating the extent of his controlling behavior. The court also heard about a brutal assault on one woman, which resulted in skin being peeled off his knuckle due to the ferocity of his punches. This attack was so severe that Brown continued to beat her even after she lost consciousness.
In a statement read out in court, the woman who was assaulted—though not convicted of rape—described her ordeal and her attempt to escape from Brown by staying at a friend’s house. She recounted how her mind had been so heavily influenced by his controlling tactics that she would ask her friend for permission just to go to the shop. Her words reflected the profound psychological damage inflicted upon her, with her stating, “No one should ever go through what I’ve gone through.”
As part of his sentence, Brown was subjected to an indefinite restraining order that prevents him from contacting both victims, ensuring their safety moving forward. The court proceedings also revealed that Brown appeared via video link from Durham Prison during sentencing, showing little emotion and occasionally playing with his hair. Despite denying the rape, he was sentenced to nine years in prison solely for that sexual assault.
In addition to the sex offense, Brown received a two-year sentence for a separate harassment incident, which was to run concurrently with his primary sentence. An additional 18-month sentence for the assault was ordered to run consecutively, making his total imprisonment period even more substantial. Brown, who previously resided on Tothill Avenue in Netherfields, is now required to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the court’s efforts to protect the community from future harm.
