ANDREW BROWN OF ORMESBY SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL SEXUAL AND VIOLENT CRIMES IN TEESSIDE

In July 2017, a woman who was victimized by Andrew Brown expressed her deep emotional pain and disappointment with the sentencing he received. During a court hearing, she delivered a heartfelt statement, revealing that she continues to suffer from nightmares and emotional scars caused by his actions. She stated, “To this day I still have nightmares,” emphasizing the lasting impact of the trauma she endured.

Andrew Brown, a man from Ormesby, was sentenced to ten and a half years in prison for his relentless campaign of cruelty and violence against women. Despite this, the victim and others present in court voiced their dissatisfaction with the length of the sentence, feeling it was insufficient to serve justice. The woman, who sat in the courtroom to witness Brown’s incarceration, expressed her disillusionment, saying, “I’m gutted. In my eyes it isn’t long enough. I don’t feel like I’ve got justice when he could be free walking the streets in five years.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Brown was subjected to an indefinite restraining order that prevents him from contacting or approaching the victims, offering some measure of protection. However, the woman who was sexually assaulted remains haunted by her experience and fears encountering Brown in public. She shared her ongoing struggles, stating, “I have always been an outgoing person with a lot of friends—I have not been that person for a long time. I have become unrecognizable.”

She further explained how the trauma has affected her ability to maintain relationships and her overall sense of safety. “I struggled to maintain relationships with friends and have become fearful of being hurt if I allow people close to me,” she said. “To this day I still have nightmares during the night because of the things he done to me. I am still frightened of Andrew and for further harm if I see him in public.”

Her emotional scars have left her living in constant fear of violence, both physical and sexual. She reflected on the profound impact of the assault, stating, “I have been left with emotional scarring, I lived every day in fear of violence both physically and sexually. I should not have been living my life in fear. The incident which occurred... will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

Andrew Brown, described as a “cowardly and pathetic” individual, was convicted of multiple charges, including a brutal attack that nearly caused permanent physical damage. The judge, Recorder Nicholas Barker, condemned Brown as a manipulative and dangerous man who posed a significant risk to women. During the sentencing, the court heard how Brown had controlled and manipulated his victims, often leaving them in a state of fear and emotional distress.

One victim recounted how Brown’s abuse extended beyond sexual assault, involving physical violence and mental manipulation. She revealed that he even coerced her into obtaining a restraining order against her own parents, illustrating the extent of his controlling behavior. The court also heard about a particularly violent incident where Brown assaulted a woman so severely that her skin was peeled from his knuckle due to the ferocity of his punches. This attack continued even after she lost consciousness, highlighting the brutality of his violence.

Brown’s sentencing included 18 months for a separate assault, which involved a beating so severe that it caused physical injury. Although he was not convicted of raping this particular victim, her account of fleeing to a friend’s house to escape his control underscored the ongoing trauma inflicted by Brown. She described how her mind had been so manipulated that she would ask her friend for permission to go shopping, illustrating the extent of his psychological hold over her.

Andrew Brown, who previously resided on Tothill Avenue in Netherfields, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life. He appeared via video link from Durham Prison during the sentencing, showing little emotion and occasionally playing with his hair. Brown denied the rape charges but was sentenced to nine years for the sexual assault alone, with an additional two-year sentence for harassment running concurrently. An 18-month sentence for the violent attack will be served consecutively, making his total imprisonment length significant.

Overall, the court’s decision reflects the severity of Brown’s crimes and the lasting impact on his victims, who continue to live with the scars of his brutality and manipulation.
