ANDREW BAKER FROM HEYBRIDGE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND INDECENT IMAGES

In March 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Andrew Baker, a resident of Heybridge, who was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison after admitting to a series of serious child sex offences and the creation of a vast collection of indecent images. The court proceedings, held at Chelmsford Crown Court, revealed the extent of Baker’s criminal activities, which spanned over seven years involving a young girl.

Judge Emma Peters delivered a stern judgment, condemning Baker for his actions and emphasizing the gravity of his offences. Baker faced nine counts related to child sexual abuse, including four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor, two counts of inciting sexual acts, and three counts of producing indecent images of children. The court heard detailed evidence from prosecutor Paul Scothern, who outlined the disturbing findings from the police investigation.

According to Mr. Scothern, law enforcement officials uncovered more than 2,600 indecent images stored on Baker’s computer, categorized into folders based on the girl’s age at the time of the images. The investigation was triggered by a complaint about historical sexual abuse received in 2017. Police executed a search warrant at Baker’s residence, seizing a laptop and mobile phone, which were subsequently analyzed. The forensic examination revealed a horrifying collection of images, including photographs of the girl engaging in sexual activities and posing provocatively for the camera.

The images were meticulously organized into folders labeled with the girl’s name and her age, with some folders spanning from age 13 to 20. The evidence indicated a significant level of premeditation and grooming, suggesting Baker had carefully curated this material over several years. The presence of images depicting other children with exposed genitals further underscored the disturbing nature of his collection and raised concerns about his potential threat to the public.

During the court hearing, Baker’s defense lawyer, Peter Barlex, argued that the relationship with the girl was consensual and that Baker believed they shared a genuine connection, with plans for a future together. He also expressed remorse for the images of other children, attributing his actions to a period of high stress and anxiety, which he claimed led to his viewing of such material. Mr. Barlex emphasized that many of the images on Baker’s devices were never intended for publication.

However, Judge Emma Peters was unequivocal in her condemnation. She criticized Baker’s distorted perception of his relationship with the girl, stating, “You described the relationship as consensual, that you had a connection. The truth is that a child cannot give consent, because he or she is a child. You were 30 years older.” The judge highlighted that Baker engaged in regular sexual activity with the girl, describing it as grooming rather than a genuine relationship. She emphasized that such conduct constitutes child abuse and is fundamentally wrong.

Judge Peters further remarked on Baker’s capacity for love, noting the tragic irony that he chose to express this through abuse rather than appropriate relationships. She sentenced him to eight years for sexual activity with a child, an additional three years for creating indecent images, and two years for inciting sexual behavior, all to run concurrently. Baker will also be registered as a sex offender for life. The judge concluded her remarks by condemning Baker’s skewed moral reasoning and expressed hope that he would learn from his time in prison, ending with a stark reminder: “You should be absolutely ashamed of yourself.”
