ROTHERHAM MAN JAILED FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ASSAULT
A man named Amer Khan, aged 42, has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for a historic rape that occurred in Rotherham over 20 years ago.The victim, a young woman in her early 20s at the time, recounted her ordeal to police, describing how Khan initially showed no signs of violence but later became verbally and physically abusive.
According to her account, Khan would pinch, slap, and punch her, and the violence escalated when he pressured her to have sex during a picnic.
She refused and attempted to escape, but Khan chased her down and raped her.
The victim was distressed during and after the assault, recalling crying at the time and Khan blaming her for what he had done.
The investigation was part of Operation Stovewood, the National Crime Agency’s probe into historic abuse allegations in Rotherham, which began in 2022 after the victim was identified through separate inquiries.
Khan was charged in February 2024 and was found guilty of one count of rape by Sheffield Crown Court, with the judge immediately sentencing him.
Upon release, he will be required to sign the sex offenders’ register.
Senior investigator Kath Blain from the NCA emphasized that Khan’s behavior escalated from showing no signs of violence to sexual violence, and praised the victim’s bravery for providing testimony that led to Khan’s conviction more than twenty years after the crime.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to seek justice for victims of historic abuse in Rotherham, where 43 individuals, including Khan, have been convicted so far.
The NCA encourages victims of sexual abuse to report and seek support, with resources available through the Rape Crisis helpline.
The investigation into abuse in Rotherham covers incidents from 1997 to 2013 and remains the largest of its kind.
