A man named Amar Khan, aged 42, has been sentenced to prison for raping a woman over 20 years ago during an abusive relationship.
The incident occurred more than two decades ago when both Khan and the victim were in their early 20s.
The assault took place after a picnic, during which Khan unsuccessfully pressured the woman into sexual activity.
Following an investigation by Operation Stovewood, a part of the National Crime Agency (NCA) focused on historic sexual abuse allegations in Rotherham, Khan was found guilty of rape.
He was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to six and a half years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender upon release.
Court proceedings revealed that Khan initially did not display violent tendencies, but over the course of their acquaintance, he became physically and verbally abusive, escalated to sexual violence, and committed the rape after the victim ran away from his advances at the picnic.
Senior investigator Kath Blain from the NCA stated that Khan's behavior escalated from no signs of violence to serious sexual assault.
The investigation was initiated in 2022 after the victim’s testimony and related evidence.
Khan was charged in February 2024 and sentenced on the same day.
Blain emphasized the importance of victims stepping forward, saying, "Our evidence and the victim's brave testimony has resulted in Khan being convicted more than 20 years after he committed his crime."
