ALLAN SHARP BANNED IN RADCLIFFE AFTER CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES DISCOVERY

In August 2022, a significant development occurred involving Allan Sharp, a former educator with ties to Radcliffe, who faced severe professional repercussions following a police investigation into his digital activities. Sharp, aged 35, previously served as a teacher at South Nottinghamshire Academy in Radcliffe and also held a teaching position at Aldercar High School in Derbyshire.

The incident came to light after law enforcement authorities uncovered indecent images of children stored on Sharp’s personal computer. A panel convened by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) examined the case and heard evidence of conduct that was deemed to be of the most serious nature. It was revealed that Sharp possessed images depicting 13 and 14-year-old boys engaged in sexual activities, with the images classified under categories A, B, and C, indicating varying degrees of severity, including penetrative acts.

These images appeared to have been kept by Sharp over a period spanning from 2009 until his arrest in 2019, raising concerns about ongoing misconduct. The TRA panel was informed that Sharp was regarded as an experienced teacher and a role model at the schools where he worked, which made his actions particularly troubling given the trust placed in educators.

Following the investigation, the TRA issued a ruling that effectively bans Sharp from teaching in any capacity within England. This prohibition is indefinite and applies to all educational institutions, including schools, sixth form colleges, youth accommodations, and children’s homes.

Sharp’s career in education began in 2009 when he took up a role as a mathematics teacher at South Nottinghamshire Academy in Radcliffe. Later, in 2017, he moved to Aldercar High School in Langley Mill, Derbyshire. His employment at Aldercar was suspended in August 2019 after police executed a search warrant at his residence, leading to his arrest on suspicion of creating indecent images of children.

By December of the same year, Sharp had resigned from his position at Aldercar High School. The legal proceedings continued, and in July 2020, he appeared before Nottingham Crown Court. He was convicted on three counts under the Protection of Children Act 1978. The court sentenced him to a two-year community order, which included 80 hours of unpaid work, and mandated his registration on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.

Additionally, the court imposed restrictions on Sharp’s use of digital devices. He was prohibited from using computers or any devices capable of internet access and was barred from possessing any device capable of storing digital images unless specific conditions were met.

The TRA’s report, published in June 2022, emphasized the gravity of Sharp’s misconduct, stating that his actions raised significant public and child protection concerns. The report highlighted that the nature of the offences, along with the context in which they were discovered and the age of the children depicted, underscored the breach of trust inherent in his role as an educator.

Despite the severity of his actions, the panel noted that prior to his conviction, Sharp maintained an otherwise unblemished record and was considered to have demonstrated good character. He engaged fully with the TRA, admitted to his conduct, and showed some remorse. However, the report also pointed out a lack of insight into the full implications of his actions, particularly his failure to recognize that images of children being abused, even if non-contact, still represented real victims and serious harm.

In conclusion, the TRA’s decision to impose an indefinite teaching ban on Allan Sharp reflects the agency’s commitment to safeguarding children and maintaining public confidence in the teaching profession. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and integrity among educators entrusted with the care of young people.
