POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR ABUSE AND ABDUCTION OF FIANCEE
Yesterday, a police officer was sentenced to 18 months in prison for subjecting his policewoman fiancé to a four-month campaign of abuse.Constable Alistair Strachan, 31 years old, appeared in court visibly surprised when the sheriff explained that his crimes warranted imprisonment due to their serious nature.
The ex-soldier, who joined the police after leaving the Army, assaulted WPC Vanda Allan, aged 23, by hitting her with his mobile phone, covering her in sauce, and making her stand outside completely naked as he threw cold water over her in buckets.
Following the end of their relationship, Strachan abducted Miss Allan and made threats to tie her up nude and leave her alone in the countryside, where she would be impossible to find.
The court detailed that these offences were linked to a troubled and stormy relationship, and noted that Strachan had experienced rage attacks after being assaulted and struck over the head during the 1993 Timex dispute.
Prosecutor Paul McBride pointed out that Strachan had taken part in notable incidents, had been treated for depression, and was taking medication while serving as a police officer.
He admitted to charges of kidnapping and assaulting Miss Allan between January and April of the previous year.
Considering his military and police careers, the judge found the offences too serious for anything but a custodial sentence.
As Strachan was taken away, his lawyer mentioned that they might appeal the verdict.
