FIREFIGHTER JAILED FOR LONG CAMPAIGN OF DOMESTIC AND CHILD ABUSE
A shamed Perthshire firefighter who conducted a 13-year-campaign of violence and abuse against two former partners - and a child - was jailed for a total of 18 months on Wednesday.Imposing the prison sentence, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis noted that the historic offences involving Alistair Foggo’s ex-wife had lasted for nine years. And his actions towards the youngster, which included burning the child on the hand with a teaspoon, had taken place over almost eight years. When asked why the child never brought the accused’s behaviour to the attention of adults, the victim told the court he "considered it was the norm and it was simply part of growing up."Sheriff Foulis added: “That, frankly, is an experience which no child should have to be subjected to.”Forty-seven-year-old Foggo, of Mill Street, Stanley, had initially served as a retained fireman from 1995-2002 and then as a full-time firefighter until 2016.During that time, he was active in saving lives as part of a firefighting team and attended multiple road accidents, some involving fatalities. His career ended after legal proceedings regarding his conduct became public earlier this year, resulting in him losing his pension and contemplating a career change to painting and decorating.Foggo was convicted in July of a series of historical abuse and assault charges from 1997 to 2010 at addresses in Perthshire, North Berwick, and Livingston. One of the assaults involved him repeatedly placing a hot metal spoon onto his then partner’s bare skin.He was also found guilty of assaulting a different partner by striking her on the face and punching her, throwing her to the ground and causing injury between 1997 and 2001.
His behaviour also included calling her offensive names, making abusive comments, and repeatedly accusing her of infidelity, with some charges related to spying on her and denying her access to her phone, mail, and money being dropped during court proceedings. The abuse of the child occurred over several years, with incidents of striking, kicking, punching on the head and body, and throwing objects, including inflicting burns with a hot spoon.
The child was subjected to threats, physical assault, and emotional abuse. The Crown requested a Non-Harassment Order, but Sheriff Foulis noted that the last incident was over six years ago and there was no indication of recent contact.
The sheriff emphasized that the offences were serious, justifying his decision to impose an 18-month jail sentence, depriving Foggo of his liberty.
