EAST YORKSHIRE HUSBAND SENTENCED FOR STRANGLING WIFE IN BRUTAL MURDER
A man described as a ‘controlling and violent’ husband has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering his estranged wife in an East Yorkshire town.
Alfredo Merigo, aged 43, carried out a brutal attack outside Linda Merigo’s home in Clematis Close, Driffield, last September, stabbing her over 100 times.
The victim was 40 years old and her two-year-old son, Luca, was present at the scene during the assault.
Merigo was convicted of murder and will serve a minimum of 28 years behind bars.
During proceedings at Sheffield Crown Court, he stated that he could not recall the attack and denied killing Linda, though he acknowledged that his actions had caused her death.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve Hibbitt of Humberside Police, leading the investigation, described Merigo as a manipulative, self-centered man who was both controlling and violent, and who meticulously planned and carried out the murder.
He remarked that Merigo’s actions had robbed their young son of his mother and devastated Linda’s relatives.
Despite abundant evidence, Merigo refused to accept responsibility, instead choosing to dishonor her memory.
Linda’s family mourned her as “a kind and loving daughter who yearned for a happy marriage and family life.”
