ALEXANDER BLISZKO PONTVPRIDD AIR CADET LEADER JAILED FOR SEX WITH 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN PONTYPRIDD

In May 2012, a serious case of criminal misconduct involving a young man from Pontypridd captured public attention and led to a significant legal outcome. Alexander Bliszko, a 20-year-old apprentice electrician with aspirations to join the Royal Air Force, was convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a minor and subsequently sentenced to two years in prison.

Bliszko, who resided on Afonfab Crescent in Pontypridd, had been an active member of the air cadet movement, where he held the position of the most senior cadet in his squadron. His ambitions to pursue a career in military service were well known within the community. However, his involvement in this criminal case abruptly ended his association with the cadet organization, leading to his expulsion.

The court proceedings revealed that Bliszko had maintained a relationship with a 15-year-old girl for several months. During the trial, he admitted to the relationship but claimed he believed she was older at the time. Prosecutor Claire Wilks pointed out that, although the girl was a willing participant, the law clearly prohibits sexual activity with minors, and Bliszko’s actions were illegal.

Details of the case showed that Bliszko’s relationship with the girl began around her birthday, which he initially believed marked her 16th year. He stated that he did not discover her true age until after they had ended their relationship. Bliszko also claimed that he never lied to her family about his age, merely assuming that her parents thought he was older. He expressed regret over the relationship, especially after the death of a close friend, which coincided with its end.

The court heard that Bliszko’s conduct was not only morally questionable but also legally culpable. He had been training to become an electrician and was preparing to sit an examination, which he missed due to his appearance in court. The judge, Recorder Paul Hopkins QC, emphasized that the law exists to protect young people from their own vulnerabilities. He acknowledged that the relationship appeared to have been consensual and loving but pointed out that the defendant was aware of her age during the course of their relationship and continued to engage in sexual activity.

Recorder Hopkins stated, “I take the view that the jury must have doubts about your state of mind at the start of the relationship, and that you became aware of her age during the course of the relationship and continued to have repeated sexual intercourse with her.” He further noted that the girl was evidently distressed when the relationship ended and was anxious to resume contact, highlighting the emotional impact of Bliszko’s actions.

While recognizing that Bliszko was diligent and hardworking, and that losing his role in the air cadets caused him significant distress, the judge concluded that a custodial sentence was necessary to uphold the law. As part of his punishment, Bliszko will be registered on the sex offenders’ register for ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his offense and the need for ongoing monitoring.
