ALEX EVANS FROM WASHINGTON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RECORDING INCRIMINATING FOOTAGE

In a disturbing case that unfolded in Washington, a teenage girl was subjected to a sexual assault by a young man who, in a shocking twist, inadvertently recorded the entire incident on his mobile phone. The incident took place in a secluded outdoor area, where the attacker, Alex Evans, then 17 years old, used his phone’s torch feature to better see what he was doing. Unbeknownst to him, this action resulted in the recording of the assault, which later became crucial evidence in his conviction.

According to court proceedings, the victim, a 16-year-old girl, had consumed cheap cider and subsequently fell asleep or became unconscious. During this vulnerable state, Evans took advantage of her condition and molested her. The court heard that as the girl began to stir during the assault, she was heard on the footage telling Evans “no, no, no,” indicating her distress and resistance. Despite her protests, Evans continued his assault, and her slurred voice and minimal movement were captured on the recording, which the prosecution accepted as evidence of his guilt.

Judge Amanda Rippon, presiding over the case at Newcastle Crown Court, addressed Evans directly, stating, “You took out your phone and used it as a torch in order, no doubt, to see better to assault her. As you did that, clear footage of what you were doing, assaulting her, was recorded on your phone.” She emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the victim’s pleas and her slurred speech were evident in the footage, and that her body was moved by Evans during the assault.

Alex Evans, who resides in Helmond, Sulgrave, Washington, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and making an indecent photograph of a child. The court sentenced him to three years and eight months in prison. Additionally, he is required to sign the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes.

During the hearing, Evans’s defense lawyer, Julie Clemiston, expressed remorse on his behalf. She highlighted that Evans, now 20, had been drinking at the time of the offence and that he has since experienced significant life changes, including becoming a father and securing employment. Clemiston stated, “He feels genuine remorse over the attack, which he carried out when he was 17, and he has grown up a great deal since then.” She also pointed out that Evans has no prior convictions related to sexual offences and is facing the consequences of his reckless youth with honesty and acceptance.

Judge Rippon concluded by underscoring the importance of public safety and the need for Evans to be held accountable, sentencing him to a substantial prison term and mandating lifelong registration as a sex offender. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless behavior and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals in society.
