ALBERT DAY FROM COMBE MARTIN FOUND GUILTY OF SEXUAL OFFENCES IN NORTH DEVON
In June 2022, a significant legal case concluded at Exeter Crown Court involving a resident of North Devon, Albert Day, also known by the alias Peter Day. The 65-year-old man from Combe Martin faced serious allegations of sexual misconduct spanning several decades.Day was accused of committing multiple historic sex offences against three different victims, with the incidents allegedly occurring between the years 1974 and 1991. These allegations brought to light a troubling pattern of abuse that had remained hidden for many years.
Throughout the trial, Albert Day maintained his innocence, denying all charges and asserting that the claims made by the victims were fabricated. He pleaded not guilty to each of the allegations, which he claimed were false accusations made by the complainants.
Evidence was presented during the proceedings, including testimonies from the victims who recounted their experiences and the impact of the alleged assaults. The court heard detailed accounts that painted a disturbing picture of the offences.
Following the presentation of evidence, the jury retired on a Friday to deliberate and reach a verdict. The trial included closing speeches from both the prosecution and the defence, after which Judge Timothy Rose summarized the case, provided legal instructions, and guided the jury in their decision-making process.
Ultimately, Albert Day was found guilty of all but two of the charges brought against him. The convictions included serious offences such as indecent assault and rape, highlighting the gravity of the crimes.
The judge listed the case for sentencing on July 15, where further legal proceedings will determine the appropriate punishment for Day’s actions. The verdict marks a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for the victims and underscores the importance of addressing historic sexual offences.
