ALAN FOSSEY FROM BLAENAVON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND DISTURBING STORIES
In a case that has shocked the community of Blaenavon and the wider South Wales region, Alan Fossey, a 58-year-old former radio DJ, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of possessing and distributing a vast collection of indecent images of children, as well as writing highly disturbing stories involving child abuse.Fossey, who once worked as a pirate radio DJ during the 1960s and 1970s and later for regional BBC radio, was discovered to have accumulated more than 4,000 indecent images of minors on his computer. The court heard that Fossey had compared his collection of these images to stamp collecting, a comment that highlighted his apparent detachment from the severity of his actions. The investigation revealed that Fossey not only possessed these images but also actively made indecent pseudo pictures of children, which he then distributed and published.
The court was informed that Fossey had published stories online totaling over two million words. These stories detailed heinous acts of abuse, torture, and murder involving babies, young children, and women. Disturbingly, some of these stories included references to real families and children with whom Fossey had come into contact, adding a layer of personal violation to his crimes. Prosecutor Caroline Rees described the content as “too depraved and gruesome” to be read aloud in open court, emphasizing the extreme nature of the material.
During police interviews, Fossey claimed he could not explain why he had written such stories, insisting they were purely fantasies. He also stated that he did not have a sexual interest in children but described his actions as a “power thing.” Despite his denials, the evidence against him was overwhelming. Fossey admitted to making indecent pseudo pictures of children, distributing them, and publishing obscene articles. He also requested that 109 other related offences be taken into consideration during sentencing.
The case came to light when a family, whose surname Fossey had used in his stories, discovered the disturbing content while researching their family name online. This discovery led to police investigations, which uncovered the extensive collection of illegal images and stories. The authorities confirmed that the images were among the worst they had ever encountered, with Judge Stephen Hopkins describing the degradation, abuse, and exploitation depicted as almost beyond description. The stories, he added, were “shocking in the extreme and sickening.”
Fossey was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, with half of that term to be served on licence. The court also imposed strict restrictions on his future activities, including a ten-year ban on owning a computer, using the internet, maintaining a private email account, or having unsupervised contact with children under 16. Additionally, Fossey was barred from working with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender. His previous career in broadcasting, which included setting up community radio stations such as Crow FM and WHAM! Radio in South Wales, as well as work in Europe, was overshadowed by the severity of his crimes, which have left a lasting stain on his reputation and the community he once served.
