AIDEN GALLON SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN DURHAM AND PETERLEE
Aiden Gallon, a young man from Durham, has been sentenced to a six-year term in a young offenders' institution after being convicted of serious sexual offences involving two victims.The conviction stems from a trial held over two days at Peterlee Youth Court in September, where Gallon was found guilty of six separate charges related to these incidents.
Gallon was accused of committing the crimes when he was just 16 years old.
He faced allegations that included one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl.
Throughout the trial, Gallon maintained his innocence, denying all charges brought against him.
Despite his protests, the youth court panel convicted him of the offences, leading to his case being transferred to Durham Crown Court for sentencing, as he had turned 18 by that time, legally rendering him an adult.
The sentencing hearing took place in October at Durham Crown Court.
Judge Jo Kidd presided over the case and ordered a temporary adjournment to allow for the preparation of a comprehensive psychological report on Gallon.
This report was intended to evaluate his potential danger to the public, especially in relation to the offences committed.
The court listened to impact statements from the victims, revealing the profound effects the incidents had on them.
One of the victims had to change her residence due to the trauma caused by Gallon, while another indicated she had started taking medication, presumably to cope with the emotional distress.
It was also noted in court that Gallon had a prior conviction for arson, characterized as reckless endangerment of life, for which he had been subjected to a youth referral order.
His previous offense added context to his mental health and behavioral history, which was considered during sentencing.
Representing Gallon, lawyer David Carmichael acknowledged that his client had struggled with issues related to anger management during his time in school, which might have contributed to his offending behavior.
Despite this, the court emphasized the severity of the offences and the need for protective measures.
In his sentencing, Judge Kidd imposed a six-year detention at a young offenders' institution.
She also issued lifelong restraining orders preventing Gallon from contacting either of the victims directly or indirectly, aiming to protect them from further harm.
Additionally, the court ordered that Gallon be subject to ongoing sex offender registration requirements, which will remain in effect indefinitely.
To further ensure public safety, Gallon was also fined a surcharge of £34 as part of the court's statutory requirements.
The judge confirmed that a prior court restriction order, which had prevented Gallon from being publicly identified in media reports, would now be lifted.
As a result, his name and details can now be publicly reported, including reports in the media about the case.
