ADRIAN SMITH OF WARMLEY SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE, FACES POSSIBLE DEATH IN PRISON
In June 2016, a distressing case unfolded involving Adrian Smith, a 74-year-old resident of St Barnabas Close in Warmley, who was convicted of serious sexual offenses committed against a young girl. The court heard that Smith, who was suffering from multiple severe health conditions including a lung disease, cancer, and heart problems, was sentenced to four years in prison for his actions. Given his fragile health and a life expectancy estimated at only two to three years, there is concern that he may not survive his incarceration.Smith maintained his innocence throughout the trial, denying any wrongdoing. However, the jury found him guilty of two counts of indecent assault on a girl aged just eight years old. The judge, Euan Ambrose, addressed Smith directly, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses. He stated, “The offences were when she was young and at a vulnerable and profoundly formative part of her life. They had significant effects on her life. A sentence of significant length may be one from which you would not emerge.”
As part of his sentence, Smith was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes. The court proceedings revealed that Smith had placed his hand inside the girl’s underwear and groped her, acts which she described as feeling “horrible.” She recounted how she remembered his breathing and his stare, while she looked at wallpaper, hoping the ordeal would end. The victim also described a second incident where Smith groped her again, but this was interrupted when a floorboard creaked, signaling someone’s approach.
The impact of these assaults was profound, with the court hearing that the girl’s trust in others was severely damaged. She became particularly protective of her own children, illustrating the long-lasting effects of the abuse. The defense, represented by Jennifer Tallentire, highlighted that Smith’s wife had left him upon learning of the allegations. Tallentire also pointed out that her client was dealing with significant physical and emotional health challenges, including his terminal illnesses.
“He is as much as he can be prepared. He has a lung condition and he is in the last phase of his life,” Tallentire explained. She acknowledged the victim’s vulnerability at the time of the offenses, emphasizing the difficult circumstances surrounding Smith’s health and mental state.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Louise Macpherson described Smith’s behavior as predatory, noting that he exploited opportunities to be alone with the young girl. She stated, “Adrian Smith was predatory in his offending and took advantage of time he spent alone with the victim. He refused to accept responsibility for his actions and the harm he caused this victim, who was forced to relive her horrific experiences in court.”
Macpherson expressed her hope that the conviction would aid the victim’s journey toward healing, acknowledging her bravery in supporting the investigation. She reaffirmed the police’s commitment to pursuing justice in cases of historic sexual abuse, regardless of how much time had passed since the offenses occurred. The case serves as a reminder that justice can be achieved even decades after the crimes, and that victims’ courage in coming forward is vital to this process.
