A 17-year-old male from Acomb, a suburb of York, has been handed down a severe nine-year prison sentence after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting five young girls.

The case, which has shocked the local community, was presided over by Judge Stephen Ashurst, who described the defendant as highly manipulative and warned that he is likely to re-offend once released from custody.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Adrian Maynard had initially established contact with his victims through social media platforms, including Facebook.

He used these online interactions to build a facade of trustworthiness, which he exploited to gain access to the victims.

The court heard that his manipulative tactics allowed him to approach vulnerable girls, some of whom had learning difficulties, and commit the heinous acts while he was on bail for previous offences.
