ADELE ANKERS OF COEDPOETH SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT AND STARVATION IN WREXHAM

Adele Ankers, formerly known as Adele Ollerhead, residing at Heol Maelor in Coedpoeth, Wrexham, has been convicted of severe animal welfare violations that resulted in the suffering and death of multiple pets. Born on December 13, 1977, Ankers faced charges related to the starvation and neglect of four dogs, two cats, and four kittens, leading to her being handed a lifetime ban on keeping animals.

The case came to light after officers from RSPCA Cymru responded to reports at her residence. Upon arrival, they discovered a distressing scene: the bodies of two terriers, Marley and Marvin, were found among other animals living in deplorable conditions. The remaining pets, including two German Shepherds and two adult cats, were also found in a state of extreme neglect, with their living environment filthy and unfit for animals.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the German Shepherds, Bonny and Lennon, and the terriers, Marley and Marvin, had been subjected to severe malnutrition. The German Shepherds were found emaciated, with their bodies showing no fat reserves, and their coats matted with faeces. One of the terriers had ingested cardboard and plasticine, indicating it had been desperately trying to eat anything to stave off hunger. The cats, Tom and Mini, were also suffering from neglect, with one of them having an excessively matted coat requiring sedation and full body shaving for treatment. Four kittens were rescued from the property after the investigation.

The animals were taken to New Broughton Vets for assessment. The condition of the German Shepherds was rated as 'one out of nine,' reflecting their critical state of malnutrition and neglect. The two dead terriers were found to have been emaciated due to a lack of food, with one of them having ingested non-food items in an attempt to survive.

Following the rescue, the surviving animals were made available for rehoming. Both German Shepherds, after receiving necessary care and treatment, were successfully rehomed. The authorities emphasized the horrific nature of the suffering inflicted upon these animals, with the chairman of the bench, Andy Stubbs, describing the case as involving "quite horrific" animal cruelty.

During the court proceedings, Ian Barnes, representing Ankers, explained that her neglect was linked to personal trauma, including the recent death of her partner, aged 41, which had left her struggling with her mental health and self-care. Barnes stated, “She is genuinely remorseful. She neglected herself, her home, and her animals. Her life fell apart when her partner died. It was a traumatic event last October.”

In sentencing, Ankers received a 16-week community order, a curfew, and was ordered to pay £385 in costs and charges. She was also banned from keeping animals for life, although she has the right to appeal this ban after ten years. The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the devastating consequences of neglect, especially in cases where personal hardship may contribute to such tragic outcomes.
