BRADFORD MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC COERCIVE CONTROL AND ABUSE
A drug-addicted man exhibiting a 'Jekyll and Hyde' personality has been sentenced to prison after his abusive behavior left his partner feeling like a servant in her own home. The court heard that Adam Winward, aged 39, would shout demands from the bedroom while high on drugs, causing fear and distress.
Bradford Crown Court was told that his ex-partner had endured years of both physical and verbal abuse, during which he monitored her mobile devices and social media, effectively cutting her off from friends and relatives.
Judge Andrew Hatton commented that Winward even tried to extend his controlling behavior by forcing her to testify against him at a previous magistrates’ hearing.
After being convicted, Winward, from Chapel Street, Bradford, was held over to the Crown Court for sentencing, where he received a prison term of three years and nine months.
The judge noted that his actions were partly aimed at humiliating and degrading her, and that she feared violence on numerous occasions.
The woman recounted feeling emotionally battered, describing her experience as being akin to slavery.
The court heard her account of her feelings during their relationship, emphasizing her sense of enslavement.
Defense advocate Jayne Beckett explained that Winward’s aggressive conduct was driven by substance abuse, describing him as having a fluctuating personality—a 'Jekyll and Hyde' figure—marked by paranoia and anxiety.
She added that he was greatly afraid of returning to prison, referencing his previous sentence from 2010, which had left a lasting impact.
The court also imposed a ten-year restraining order preventing him from contacting her or visiting her residence.
Judge Hatton highlighted that all Winward’s actions aimed to humiliate his partner and that she suffered substantial psychological harm, feeling as if she was a slave.
In conclusion, Winward was sentenced to nearly four years in prison and issued a ten-year order to stay away from the victim.
