ADAM TOPLEY FROM CINDERHILL SENTENCED IN NOTTINGHAM FOR POSSESSING INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN
In November 2017, Adam Topley, a 32-year-old resident of Tilbury Rise in Cinderhill, found himself in serious legal trouble after being convicted of possessing indecent images of children. The case was heard at Nottingham Crown Court, where Topley received a sentence that included a suspended prison term, highlighting the gravity of his offenses.According to court records, Topley's arrest was initiated following a police raid at his home on August 28 of that year. Law enforcement officials executed a search warrant and subsequently detained him in connection with the creation and possession of illegal images. During the investigation, authorities seized his laptop and iPhone for forensic examination, which revealed disturbing content.
Prosecutor Dawn Pritchard detailed the findings, stating that among the images recovered from Topley's devices was a photograph of a girl estimated to be between eight and ten years old. Additionally, there were two other images depicting girls aged between 12 and 14 years. The material also included 12 images classified as extreme pornography, with ten of these being videos, raising serious concerns about the nature of the content.
The court was informed that Topley had a prior conviction from 12 years earlier, involving 20 offenses of a similar nature. He had served time in a young offenders' institution for those crimes. This previous conviction underscored the severity of his current charges, which included making an indecent photograph of a child before August 29, possessing extreme pornography at his residence, and related offenses.
Defense lawyer Matthew Smith argued that Topley’s actions stemmed from a broader issue of pornography addiction rather than a specific intent to exploit children. He emphasized that there were no child-specific search terms used during his online activity and that the images appeared to have resulted from following links while viewing adult pornography. Smith also pointed out that Topley had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and expressed genuine remorse for his actions.
Judge Rosalind Coe QC addressed the court, acknowledging the seriousness of the offenses. She ordered Topley to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register and imposed a sexual harm prevention order for ten years. The judge sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and mandated 120 hours of unpaid work along with ten days of rehabilitation activities. She also noted that Topley had pleaded guilty to three offenses at the magistrates’ court.
In her remarks, Judge Coe highlighted the significance of Topley’s previous conviction from 2005, which involved 20 similar counts and resulted in a six-month detention in a young offenders' institution. She emphasized that this prior history added weight to the current case, illustrating a pattern of concerning behavior. The judge also acknowledged receiving supportive letters from Topley’s family members, including his mother, father, and wife, but reaffirmed the seriousness of the charges and the need for appropriate sentencing to protect the public.
