ADAM THOMAS FROM COLWYN BAY ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON CHILD
In a case that has shocked the community of Colwyn Bay, Adam Thomas, a 31-year-old man, appeared before Mold Crown Court to face serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a young girl. The incident reportedly took place over twelve years ago, during which Thomas was entrusted with babysitting a five-year-old girl. The court heard that Thomas had admitted to encouraging the child to perform a sexual act, an act that has caused significant concern and distress.Despite the gravity of the allegations, Thomas was not handed an immediate custodial sentence. Instead, Judge Niclas Parry delivered a verdict that reflected both the nature of the offense and Thomas’s personal circumstances. The judge emphasized that Thomas had been in a position of trust when he was responsible for the young girl, and he expressed his disapproval of the actions that targeted such a vulnerable individual. "Your unthinkable actions deliberately targeted a child who was particularly vulnerable because of her young age," Judge Parry stated during the hearing.
Thomas’s plea of guilty was accepted by the court, which considered his criminal record spanning over 15 years. His past convictions included offenses related to assault, dishonesty, and a serious robbery, but notably, he had no previous convictions for sexual offenses. The judge acknowledged that the guilty plea was a significant factor in the decision to avoid immediate imprisonment.
It was also noted that the incident was brief and did not involve penetration or the touching of naked genitalia. Judge Parry highlighted that Thomas was suffering from mental health issues, which he believed were linked to a serious assault he had experienced around the time of the offense. This context was considered as part of the mitigation.
As a result, Thomas was sentenced to an eight-month prison term, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete a sex offender treatment program and was placed under a two-month tagged curfew, requiring him to remain indoors between 6:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offender register for ten years. However, the court rejected the prosecution’s request for a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO), which would have imposed further restrictions.
Prosecutor John Philpotts revealed that last year, a woman in her twenties came forward with allegations that she had been babysat by Thomas as a child. She claimed that during that time, Thomas had compelled her to put her hand down his trousers and touch his genitals. Thomas’s defense acknowledged that the touching did not involve his naked genitalia, and he maintained that the incident was brief and lacked penetration. The complainant had confided in a friend about her experiences, which led to the case being reopened.
In court, Jayne La Grua, representing Thomas, explained that he was living in supported accommodation and was supported by a social worker. The case has raised serious concerns within the community of Colwyn Bay, highlighting the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and ensuring appropriate legal responses to such allegations.
