In a series of disturbing incidents spanning several years, Adam Hathaway, a man with a long history of sexual offenses and fraudulent activities, has once again come under the scrutiny of the courts for breaching court orders and engaging in predatory behavior. Hathaway, aged 22 and residing in Earswick Close, York, has demonstrated a pattern of deception and illegal contact with minors, despite being under strict legal restrictions designed to protect children from his influence.

His criminal record is extensive, beginning with his first conviction at the age of 17, when he was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for sexual assaults on young girls in North Yorkshire and for establishing a fake modeling company under the guise of measuring girls for clothing, which he used as a pretext for inappropriate contact. Since then, Hathaway has repeatedly defied court orders, including a ten-year sexual offences prevention order, which was meant to prevent him from having unsupervised contact with children or even being near them without proper oversight.

In December 2014, Hathaway was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after he was found guilty of breaching this order multiple times. Prosecutor Nicholas Rooke outlined to York Crown Court how Hathaway had posed as a talent scout, luring children to fake auditions for the West End show 'Matilda.' He also traveled to Thailand without informing authorities, from where he was deported, and then moved on to Cambodia, all while under legal restrictions that prohibited such travel.

Further, Hathaway attempted to deceive airline staff by claiming to be a member of cabin crew and falsely related himself to a UN worker. His manipulative tactics extended to securing a front-of-house position at the Phoenix Theatre in London, where he interacted with young theatre-goers and rehearsing children, despite the court orders against him. He also worked in the scenery department of a stage production company, where he persuaded a worker to bring her young children, aged four years and seven months, into his office, raising serious concerns about his ongoing risk to minors.

It was revealed that Hathaway had been on parole from a previous sentence of nearly four years, handed down in 2011, for sexual offenses involving girls and for setting up a fraudulent modeling agency. His history of deception includes convincing aviation executives that he was the head of a multinational airline with a turnover of £4.5 billion, and owning chains such as Top Shop and JJB, in an elaborate scam to secure airline contracts to Jersey. He also negotiated contracts with property firms and design agencies under false pretenses, creating fake websites to support his fabricated business interests.

During the court proceedings, Hathaway admitted to four breaches of the sexual offences prevention order. Recorder Benjamin Nolan QC condemned his actions, stating, “For a man of 22, you have the previous convictions of an elderly paedophile.” The court heard that Hathaway’s attempts to manipulate and deceive extended to multiple identities, including Adam Bentley and Adam Barraclough, which he used to evade detection and continue his predatory activities.

In mitigation, defense lawyer Maria Temkow argued that Hathaway was desperate for acceptance and that his love for theatre stemmed from his childhood, which was filled with happier memories. She emphasized that Hathaway had not sexually abused any of the children involved in his recent offenses and was still young, learning to abide by the court’s restrictions.

His criminal history also includes a 2012 incident where he was caught traveling with a woman and her 20-month-old child, despite being prohibited from contact with children. Hathaway falsely claimed to the woman that he was a professional dancer, unaware that police had identified him as a high-risk offender. After a car crash during the journey, police arrested him for breaching his order, resulting in an additional 12 months imprisonment.

Hathaway’s pattern of deception and illegal contact with minors has been a cause for ongoing concern. His repeated breaches and manipulative tactics highlight the challenges faced by authorities in monitoring and controlling individuals with such extensive criminal backgrounds. His latest sentencing underscores the seriousness of his violations and the ongoing risk he poses to children in the York area and beyond.
