In April 2019, a serious case emerged involving Adam Carter, a firefighter with ties to the towns of Horncastle and Woodhall Spa, who was found to have downloaded and possessed indecent images of children. The case drew significant attention due to Carter's respected background and his role in the fire service, which contrasted sharply with the nature of his offenses.

Police first became aware of Carter’s activities when he was linked to users on a file-sharing platform on the internet. This connection prompted an investigation that ultimately led to a raid on his residence in Abbey Drive, Woodhall Spa, in November 2017. During the search, officers seized multiple electronic devices, which were later examined in detail.

The forensic analysis uncovered a disturbing collection of material dating back to 2007 and 2008. Among the findings were several indecent images of children, most of which had been downloaded from the internet. Additionally, investigators discovered a short video clip that Carter had personally filmed, adding a further layer of concern to the case. The evidence indicated that Carter had been involved in creating and sharing such material for over a decade.

Prosecutor Stuart Lody highlighted the severity of the case, stating that seven of the images found were classified as the most serious category. An additional ten images of a pornographic nature involving children were also recovered from the hard drive. The police investigation revealed a disturbing mix of content, including a video clip filmed by Carter himself and an extreme pornographic image depicting bestiality. These findings painted a troubling picture of Carter’s activities.

During police interviews, Carter initially denied any involvement but later pleaded guilty to multiple charges. His offenses included three counts of taking indecent images of a child, one count of making such images, and possession of an extreme pornographic image. His address was listed as Woodhall Road, Horncastle.

In sentencing, Judge Simon Hirst acknowledged Carter’s previously unblemished character and his contributions as a tradesman and firefighter, which had earned him commendations. The judge also noted that Carter had undergone counseling and had behaved heroically in other circumstances, saving two lives. Based on these factors, the judge decided to suspend Carter’s 16-month jail sentence for two years, with a requirement for two years of supervision. Additionally, Carter was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was subject to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order.

Judge Hirst emphasized that the decision to suspend the sentence was a balanced judgment, considering Carter’s good character and efforts to address his issues. The case remains a stark reminder of the complex nature of such offenses and the importance of thorough investigation and sentencing.
