UK'S FIRST 'HONOUR KILLING' OF A SCHOOLGIRL
Abdalla Yones, a father of Kurdish Muslim background and a political refugee fleeing Saddam Hussein’s brutal regime in Iraq, was convicted of murdering his 16-year-old daughter Heshu Yones at their family residence in Acton, west London, in October 2002.
The court noted that Yones viewed his daughter as being 'too westernised' and took offense upon discovering she had a romantic relationship with an 18-year-old Lebanese Christian.
On October 12, 2002, he killed Heshu by stabbing her 17 times with a kitchen knife.
Even after she managed to escape and locked herself inside the bathroom, Yones broke the door down and slit her throat.
Following the murder, he attempted to take his own life by cutting his throat and then jumping from a third-floor balcony.
Initially, he falsely claimed that members of al Qaida had entered his home, murdered his daughter, and attacked him, before throwing him off the balcony.
He later pleaded guilty to the murder, which was regarded as an honour killing, and was sentenced to life in prison in September 2003.
