BRADFORD MAN AVOIDS IMMEDIATE PRISON FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AFTER GUILTY PLEA
Aasim Awan, aged 27 and a resident of Downing Close in Bradford, was responsible for severe domestic violence towards his wife, with whom he has two children.Although a domestic violence protection order was in effect and police had previously responded to calls at their home, his wife initially did not support pressing charges.
On the day he appeared in Bradford Crown Court, she described feeling as if a part of herself had passed away when he was remanded into custody last year.
Prosecutor Lauren Smith confirmed that Awan pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, relating to incidents on July 16 and July 27.
The first incident involved Awan’s jealousy after discovering a Facebook friend request on his wife’s phone, which he accessed, and he called her a derogatory term.
During that episode, he demanded entry into their home, communicated with her through a window, then left.
Later that day, arguments resumed; he slapped her, pulled her hair causing some hair to fall out, and kicked her twice while she was on the ground, resulting in visible injuries.
He also verbally abused her, kicked the door causing damage, and assaulted her further by punching and kicking her while calling her offensive names.
The second incident was sparked by his jealousy of a passer-by and an argument over her phone calls.
Awan slapped her again, dragged her by the hair causing hair loss, and she fell to the floor in fear, urinating.
She managed to escape the house and sought help as he chased her, with footage from a doorbell camera capturing the attack.
Police interviewed him, but he made no comment, and he remains remanded.
The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 40 days of rehabilitative work.
The judge stated that his actions violated his partner’s safety and sense of security, highlighting the seriousness of his conduct.
