2018: MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULTING EX-PARTNER
Jordan Pears, 24, of Cae Gwyn in Llanidloes, Powys, faces 16 months in jail after he admitted twice assaulting ex-partner Amber McDonagh and subjecting her to fear of violence by harassment.Judge Niclas Parry said Pears had subjected his former partner to 'sinister and controlling behaviour'.
The court heard how, weeks into their relationship, Pears strangled Miss McDonagh until she struggled to breathe.
A month later he pushed her head under water when she was in the bath when the pair were staying in a Hereford hotel.
Prosecuting, Jo Maxwell, said: “She felt water rushing into her mouth and was genuinely concerned that she would drown.” After the attack Miss McDonagh made it clear she did not want to continue the relationship with Pears, leading to him 'bombarding' her with 'menacing and intimidatory' messages.
She later found that she was pregnant and agreed to see him in December but locked herself in the bathroom because of his behaviour.
Her uncle had to physically remove him from her flat but he continued to send her threatening messages on social media, the court heard.
In a victim impact statement, Miss McDonagh said that she just wanted a happy and safe life with her child but found she now has less trust in people and suffers anxiety as a consequence of Pears' behaviour.
