53-YEAR-OLD MAN JAILED FOR CONTROLLING AND VIOLENT ABUSE OF PARTNER IN INGLEBY BARWICK
Younas Mohammed, aged 53, was convicted of controlling and coercive behaviour towards his former partner between 2017 and 2020.During this period, he subjected her to physical violence, including throwing a sand block at her, striking her in the face, kicking her in the shins, pulling her hair, and biting her cheek.
He also dictated her daily routines, including when she could leave the house, where she slept, her use of the toilet, and her phone use.
The court heard that he would call her degrading names such as "bad mother, s**t, tramp, and a grass," and he would threaten her, her family, and know her every move.
His abusive regime left her feeling "worthless," depressed, and suffering from anxiety, to the point where she deteriorated to six stone and no longer wanted to live.
A victim impact statement read out in court described how he "ruined my and my children's lives with his destructive and violent behaviour and his mental torture," leaving her "just a shell of myself, absolutely broken with no hope." The relationship ultimately led to social services removing her children from the property.
During the proceedings, Recorder Taryn Turner summarized: "The relationship between you and her quickly turned toxic.
This resulted in you behaving violently towards her and controlling her." In mitigation, it was noted that he can be rehabilitated, has a relationship with his children, and hopes to become an HGV driver in the future.
He pleaded guilty to engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and was sentenced to 27 months in prison, also being banned from contacting the victim.
