FORMER GARDA (POLICE OFFICER) JAILED FOR SIX YEARS FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING WOMAN AT GARDA STATION
A man who previously worked as a police officer has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of unlawfully detaining and sexually assaulting a woman at a Garda station in County Wicklow.William Ryan, aged 41, was convicted last year by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury on three counts of sexual assault and one count of false imprisonment, all occurring at Aughrim Garda station on September 29, 2020.
Since the conviction, Ryan has been in custody and has stepped down from his role with An Garda Síochána.
The victim, whose identity remains confidential, testified that she felt “broken” and “degraded” during the legal proceedings.
Throughout the trial, Ryan offered a false version of events, which the prosecution dismissed as “badly-written erotica.” Ryan’s defense lawyer stated that his client now “unreservedly accepts his guilt” regarding all charges.
The court also heard 35 character references supporting him, including statements from fellow gardaí and a former superintendent, with Ryan having no previous criminal record.
Judge Elma Sheahan highlighted the significance of maintaining public confidence in law enforcement, noting that Ryan’s actions constituted a “breach of trust” between an officer and the community.
The legal maximum penalties for sexual assault and false imprisonment are ten years and life imprisonment, respectively.
The judge initially imposed an eight-year sentence but lowered it to six, taking into account mitigating circumstances.
During the trial, it was revealed that Ryan prevented the woman from leaving the station after she visited to seek help regarding her seized car, a matter she had discussed over the phone earlier.
Ryan instructed her to “wear something tight” before her arrival.
Inside the station, he sexually assaulted her twice slapping her bottom and groping her breast and then took her upstairs, where he masturbated while she faced away and later digitally penetrated her.
Before going upstairs, she showed Ryan a photograph of herself in swimwear, attempting to appease him.
Ryan claimed that the encounter was consensual, but this was dismissed by the prosecution as “implausible” and comparable to “badly-written erotica.” The victim stated that she had “never felt so uncomfortable, so afraid,” especially during the trial.
She said Ryan’s account caused her additional suffering, undoing years of effort to rebuild her life after the incident.
She described feeling “frozen” during the attack, contradicting her previous belief that she could fight off such an assault.
Since then, she has secluded herself at home, fearing social interactions and public places.
Despite knowing she did nothing wrong, she has experienced feelings of “shame,” which have impacted her mental health over the years.
