WILLIAM MACKAY FROM ROSS-SHIRE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN GLASGOW COURT

In a case that has shocked the community of Ross-shire and the surrounding areas, William Mackay, a 70-year-old former publican from Dingwall, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for sexually abusing two young girls over an extended period spanning from 1986 to 1994. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Glasgow, bringing closure to a distressing case that uncovered years of hidden abuse.

William "Billy" Mackay’s criminal actions came to light after one of his victims, suffering from disturbing flashbacks, sought therapy and was able to recall the traumatic events. Alongside her, another victim also came forward, and through the process of dream therapy, they both confirmed that Mackay had sexually abused them during their childhoods. The abuse reportedly began when one of the girls was only seven years old, highlighting the severity and long-lasting impact of his crimes.

Although Mackay was acquitted of the more serious charge of rape during the trial, he was convicted on three counts of sexual abuse related to incidents at a residence in Muir of Ord. The court heard that the abuse took place over several years, with the victims enduring a period of exploitation that has left lasting scars.

During the proceedings, Mackay’s defense attorney, Frances McMenamin, emphasized his poor physical health and memory issues, including short-term memory loss. Mackay, who previously operated a public bar in Dingwall, continues to deny any wrongdoing despite the convictions. His defense highlighted his health problems, which include walking with a stick and suffering from significant medical issues.

Judge Graham Buchanan, presiding over the case, expressed strong disapproval of Mackay’s continued denial of the charges. In his sentencing remarks, the judge stated, “You continue to maintain your innocence of these charges and were acquitted of more serious charges towards these girls at the young ages they were was quite disgraceful. A significant custodial sentence is the only appropriate form of disposal.”

Furthermore, the court ordered Mackay to be placed on the sex offenders’ register, acknowledging the gravity of his crimes. A psychologist who examined Mackay concluded that he suffers from an anti-social personality disorder, which may have contributed to his offending behavior.

It was also noted that Mackay, who walks with a stick due to his health issues, is considered a medium risk of re-offending. However, because the crimes occurred before the legislation allowing for extended sentences with community monitoring was enacted, the court was unable to impose such a sentence. The judge emphasized that Mackay’s health and age would be taken into account during his time in custody, but the sentence reflects the serious nature of his offenses and the lasting harm caused to his victims.
