MAN WHO STRANGLED GIRLFRIEND AFTER HE DIDN'T DO THE WASHING UP IS SPARED JAIL
A MAN who hit his girlfriend around the head with a bottle and strangled her because he didn't do the washing up has been spared jail.
William James, 22, formerly of Old Basing but now residing in Devon, appeared in Winchester Crown Court on September 12 after pleading guilty to one count of strangulation and two counts of assault by beating.
The court heard that on December 1, 2023, in Andover, James poured beer over his girlfriend and hit her with the bottle.
In a separate incident on February 25, 2024, he strangled her, poured water over her head, and physically assaulted her when she called for help.
The victim described the incident as 'very traumatic.' James received a 46-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months, along with requirements for counseling, unpaid work, and a restraining order preventing contact with the victim.
The judge noted James's responsibilities for his grandfather and his apprenticeship as a butcher, and emphasized the breach of trust involved in the case.
