Essex Child Sexual Abuser
William Emery, a 71-year-old man from Essex, has been convicted and sentenced for sexually abusing a young girl over 25 years ago. The victim, who is now an adult residing in Sheffield, expressed a profound sense of relief and gratitude after finally seeing justice served in her case. She shared her emotional journey, stating: “I wasn’t believed when I was young, but finally I had the strength to say what had happened to me. It was extremely difficult and traumatic at times, but the support from Essex Police and officers in Sheffield really helped me through. I feel like I can now start to repair my life. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I have been through, but making the call to Essex Police was the best decision I could have made.”
Her case was brought to light following an investigation that commenced in April 2019, after reports surfaced concerning abuse that had taken place two and a half decades earlier. Despite Emery’s repeated denials of the allegations, authorities moved forward with charges in August 2022, accusing him of two counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14, as well as inciting a girl under 14 to commit gross indecency. The trial was held at Basildon Crown Court, where Emery faced the court’s judgment.
On September 3 of the previous year, Emery was found guilty on all counts. The court subsequently sentenced him on January 31 to four years and ten months in prison. Additionally, he was given an extra year on license, which means he will be under supervision after his release. As part of his punishment, Emery was ordered to register on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Detective Constable Jane Egerton, a member of the Essex Police Quest team dedicated to cases involving victims who are now adults, praised the survivor’s resilience and bravery in supporting the investigation. She highlighted the victim’s “immense tenacity and courage” in coming forward after so many years. The officer reaffirmed the police’s commitment to supporting victims of sexual abuse and emphasized the importance of reporting such crimes. She encouraged others who have experienced similar trauma to seek help and to come forward, reinforcing that justice can be pursued regardless of how much time has passed.
