MAN SENTENCED AFTER HEATHFIELD ASSAULT
A man has been sentenced following an assault that left a woman with severe facial injuries in Heathfield.On July 15, 2023, police responded to reports that a man had punched a woman in the face and caused damage to property at a home in Cross in Hand, Heathfield.
The assault resulted in the victim sustaining a broken nose and damaged teeth.
Police officers arrived at the scene and detained a 35-year-old man on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.
On July 4, 2024, William Bennett, 35, of Heathfield Road, Five Ashes, was charged with three counts of assault, two counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of criminal damage, and one count of controlling and coercive behavior.
Bennett was released on bail while awaiting further court dates and maintained a plea of not guilty.
During his court trial that started on August 4, Bennett changed his plea, admitting guilt to the criminal damage charge.
The trial, which extended over four days, resulted in Bennett being found guilty of causing actual bodily harm as well.
He was subsequently bailed again as he waited for his sentencing.
On October 10, Bennett appeared at Hove Crown Court, where he was issued a 10-year restraining order against the victim, and was ordered to participate in rehabilitative programs.
He was also sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, along with a fine of £3,000.
