WAHIDUZZAMAN AKANDA SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES IN GRAVESEND
On the evening of October 2, 2020, a disturbing incident unfolded at a local establishment in Gravesend involving MD Wahiduzzaman Akanda, a bar manager known in the area. The events that transpired led to his eventual conviction and a seven-year prison sentence, highlighting the serious nature of the offences committed.According to court proceedings, Akanda was present at his workplace when he engaged in a troubling pattern of behavior towards a female patron. Despite her clear refusals, he persisted in pressuring her to consume alcohol. He forced her to drink a mixture of cocktails and shots, which resulted in her becoming ill. This act of coercion was a significant factor in the subsequent events that unfolded that night.
The situation escalated when Akanda followed the woman into the female toilets. There, he committed sexual assault against her, despite her protests and pleas for him to stop. The victim was heard crying during the assault, and her distress was noticed by another individual who attempted to check on her well-being. However, Akanda intervened, claiming that she was fine, and the concerned person left the scene.
After Akanda exited the restroom, the victim managed to lock herself in a cubicle and contacted the police to report the incident. She then left the premises to seek safety. Law enforcement officers quickly responded and located Akanda the following day. He was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of sexual assault.
Akanda, who was residing on Railway Street in Gillingham at the time, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his initial court appearance at Maidstone Crown Court. However, after a thorough trial, the jury found him guilty of the offences. On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the court sentenced him to seven years in prison, marking a significant outcome in the pursuit of justice for the victim and the community of Gravesend.
