DERBYSHIRE MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL ELDERLY HOME INVASION AND MURDER
Vasile Culea has been convicted for a brutal home invasion in Derbyshire that resulted in the death of 86-year-old Freda Walker and serious injuries to her husband, 88-year-old Ken Walker.According to court reports, Culea entered their Station Road house in Langwith Junction on 14 January, where he forcibly restrained and gagged Mrs.
Walker before violently attacking her, leading to her death.
He also assaulted Mr.
Walker, leaving him badly hurt but alive.
Culea's motive was financially motivated, as he aimed to steal money stored by the couple, including £30,000 intended for home improvements.
Despite claiming he took only £300, police later found £27,000 hidden in different parts of their house.
During the trial at Derby Crown Court, evidence was presented that Culea had used tight restraints on Mrs.
Walker and wrapped her head and neck prior to fleeing.
CCTV footage showed him outside the property, resulting in his arrest in the early morning hours of 20 January at his home.
Culea was convicted of murder and grievous bodily harm with intent and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 34 years for the murder, plus an additional 14 years for the attack.
The court emphasized that Mrs.
Walker’s age-related vulnerability made the crime worse, though it was suggested Culea may not have intended to kill her, only to cause serious injury.
His criminal history includes a 2017 conviction for common assault, and he expressed remorse during sentencing.
Police identified him through DNA evidence on a cap recovered from the scene.
The investigation was led by Detective Inspector Carolyne Van Schaick, who praised the bravery of the victims’ family and friends.
The incident shocked the Langwith Junction community, where Mr.
Walker was a well-known local councillor.
The case left the community mourning the loss of a respected resident and dealing with the ongoing grief caused by the incident, which also brought to light the extent of Culea’s violent actions.
